Mengenang Joel Schumacher Lewat Desain Kostum dan Filmnya
Sutradara yang lahir di New York ini sebenarnya mengawali karier sebagai fesyen desainer di tahun 1970-an. Tak heran dia memilih profesi itu karena dirinya adalah lulusan New School for Design and the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York.
Dia memutuskan untuk banting stir sebagai sutradara setelah pindah ke Los Angeles. Tetapi kariernya tergolong tak mudah, dia kembali berkutat dengan fesyen untuk tayangan televisi.
Rancangan kostumnya pun tersebar di berbagai film dan mendapat pujian dari berbagai kalangan, misalnya rancangannya di film Play It as Lays, Blume in Love, The Last of Sheila, Sleeper, hingga The Prisoner of Second Avenue.
Sementara kariernya sebagai sutradara di mulai dari televisi. Saat itu dia dipercaya menggarap Virgina Hill tahun 1974. Dia semakin melebarkan sayapnya sebagai sutradara saat dipercaya menggarap film komedi fiksi ilmiah tahun 1981 lewat The Incredible Shrinking Woman.
Joel Schumacher pun kian terkenal di kancah hiburan berkat menggantikan Tim Burton oleh Warner Bros untuk menggarap franchise Batman lewat Batman Forever. Saat itu film garapannya dibintangi oleh Val Kilmer, Tommy Lee Jones, Jim Carrey, dan juga Nichol Kidman.
Film yang tayang tahun 1995 ini berhasil meraup keuntungan hingga 336 juta dolar AS di seluruh dunia atau sekitar Rp4,7 triliun. Dia pun melanjutkan kariernya sebagai sutradara film Batman lewat film Batman and Robin tahun 1997. Aktor Arnold Schwarzenegger pun didapuk sebagai penjahat yang dikenal dengan Mr.Freeze.
Melansir dari Variety, di film Batman Forever, Schumacher memasukkan desain kostum nyentrik dan berunsur homoeroticism laten, yang sebelumnya memang sudah sangat melekat di karakter Batman dan Robin.

We did one of his films here at the DTVC, “Batman and Robin”, back on March 27, 2010, I think when we were doing weekly wild card posts, or maybe when we were covering critically panned comic book movies. When I think of Schumacher and his films as a whole, I think no director, other than maybe Penelope Spheeris, did more to shape my view of the world growing up in the 80s and 90s than he did. Setelah kejadian dan kehebohan di film Batman, Schumacher memulai kembali kariernya dengan menggarap film adaptasi musikal Andrew Lloyd Webber, The Phantom of the Opera.
Sedikit mundur ke belakang tepatnya tahun 1985, dia berhasil menggarap film St. Elmo's Fire, sekaligus menulis naskah film fiturnya. Film yang dibintangi oleh Demi Moore ini sukses di pasaran dan menjadi salah satu film hit pada masanya. Film hit selanjutnya yang juga dia garap ialah The Lost Boys yang menceritakan sekelompok vampir yang menguasai kota kecil di California.
Berbagai film sejak tahun 1970 hingga masa akhirnya pun telah mewarnai industri perfilman Hollywood dan menjadikannya sosok paling berpengaruh di dunia hiburan.
Tahun 2010 Schumacher mendapat penghargaan spesial dari International Film Festival of the Art of Cinematography. Setahun kemudian dia juga dianugerahi penghargaan terhormat dari Costume Designers Guild Awards.
