I’ve been onboard the @noaa vessel Nancy Foster for a few days now and we’ve finally hit our groove. The 15 scientists and the NOAA ship crew are working like a well-oiled machine. I figured it’s time I share with y’all what I’ve been doing during my time aboard the boat. ~ ~ My dissertation research focuses on coral microbial communities and how the environment alters the species present within the coral tissue. Corals rely on a whole suite of bacteria, algae, and archaea to help them survive in their salty home. These microbes can help the coral digest food, break down compounds and even protect them from parasites and disease, but some of them are more harmful than helpful and can damage and/or kill a coral. ~ ~ I’m here at @graysreefnmsf doing a multi-year assessment of the microbial communities in three species of soft corals. Gray’s Reef is a dynamic environment with a lot of natural variation in water temperature and pH and pC02(the partial pressure of Carbon Dioxide in the water), AND there are water monitoring stations in the sanctuary that measure these variables 24/7. This makes Gray’s Reef an ideal place to examine how natural environmental shifts impact the types and numbers of microbes present in the soft corals. ~ ~ To obtain these microbes, I clip a small tissue sample from each coral of interest and place it in a sterile bag.
